The Pretty Poodle is a children's book that promotes literacy and encourages academic achievement.  This work of historical fiction is the tale of a young girl named Mary who learns valuable lessons that inspire her historic accomplishments later in life.

The story is a tribute to Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, an orphan, educator, and pioneer who organized seven African-American women on the predominantly white campus of Butler University in 1922 to form what is today an international public service organization comprised of over 100,000 women dedicated to motivating youth to greater horizons.

The book’s messages of perseverance, family, values, love, and achieving goals are timeless, valuable life lessons that are appropriate for children of all ages and backgrounds.

FROM A READER:

"The Pretty Poodle by Angela Majette is an inspiring and heartwarming story about a young girl named Mary who wants a poodle more than anything else in the world, but will she meet the expectations of her parents? This historically based but fictional story is dedicated to Mary Lou Allison Gardener Little a woman who founded Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in 1922 with six other young professional women so they could help encourage African American young adults to follow their dreams and seek greater heights. Like Mary Lou Allison Gardener Little the young girl in this story sets a goal and with hard work and dedication reaches it. As Mary turns to her parents for encouragement and love, she gains confidence and learns valuable lessons about developing a strong work ethic and achieving her goals. This narrative with its wonderfully, clear, and bright illustrations, its rich African American flavor warms your heart just as it challenges children and nourishes their dreams.”

Whether done remotely or in person, there is nothing quite like  author visits to get kids reading, writing, and understanding the creative process. Meeting authors makes the writing process,

books, and the authors themselves accessible and real to students.

An author visit is an enriching experience that is often described as

having a profound and lasting impact on students.
